4 WEEKS TO GO - MA UPDATE

23/7/2022

I’m heading into the last 4 weeks before I install my MA degree show and thought you’d like to see what I’ve been doing this week.

This week in my studio…

I decided it was time to face power tools again - 4 weeks on from my accident my arm is healing well and it was time to strengthen my confidence. I used my chainsaw to cut lots of sandwiched foam, then worked on the details with an electric bread knife, hand saw and rasp.

I’ve made more progress on the glue gun pod, the wire pods, and finished two more string pods

I’ve given some focus to my colourful seeds, bringing the ceramic ones home to paint, and splatting more material to sew on the felt and fur ones.

I finished the curtain rings pod and I had 2 fabulous studio assistants create papermache pods and felt seeds for me.

Here's my studio visit video from this week...

How's it going? ...

  1. This week I completed my Exhibition Proposal, otherwise known as a Case for a Space, this describes in detail what it is I’m doing and why and where I would ideally like my exhibition to be. Here is a link to to take a look: MA EXHIBITION PROPOSAL
  2. It’s a challenging time as there is a lot of overlap of groups of students wanting the same spaces for the show, we’ve all also suggested 2nd choices and are expecting some compromise. It’s really tricky, I really want to make sure that others are happy and their work gets the space it deserves but at the same time I’ve been working really hard and have an ideal of what I’d like my show to be. Due to window replacement across the school of art clashing with our show, there aren’t as many rooms available this time. So it’s a bit of a tense wait for a few more days for us all to see what our tutor decides and what impact that will have on our plans.
  3. I’ve also had to complete a Risk Assessment Form. Basically listing everything that could possibly go wrong with the installation I have planned which feels really counter- intuitive, which I’m trying to persuade them to let me do this ambitious project! I’ve thought this installation through so thoroughly, and have an answer and solution to every concern I think, so I’m hoping they will see this and give me the green light.
  4. There’s a lot of uncertainty to handle right now a. Will I get the space that I’ve been designing my work for or have to adapt/downside my plans (how big a compromise will this be) b. Will they allow me to do what I’m wanting to do in the space? c. Do I have time to get everything ready in time?
  5. On top of the art this week has been mega full with daughters birthdays, 2 performances, a graduation evening, visitors and a long meeting with fellow students to plan the admin of the show. My task is to do the map and list of works.
