LIFE AFTER MA

21/10/2022

As you probably know, I completed my Master Degree in Fine Art four weeks ago, and I thought it was about time I checked in with you about what I’ve been up to since.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

As soon as my final write up was handed in I headed for the seaside! August and the summer kind of came and went this year without my noticing, and my family had to holiday without me. I stayed in a gorgeous Airbnb in Southwold, a stones through from the sandy beach, the ice cream parlour and the chippy. I booked a massage and manicure, I slept, I lazed about in my PJs watching films, I enjoyed a well earned rest.

WHAT THEN?

I worked harder and pushed beyond anything I’ve ever done before to complete my MA and now I’ve stopped I’m realising how much it’s taken out of me! To be honest it’s felt almost like recovering from a trauma. Once I’d finally managed to achieve the task of creating everything to go in my installation, the final week of installing turned out to be more challenging than ideal for reasons I won’t go into, and then once the exhibition was up and running, when I felt I had nothing left to give, I had to create 12 elements for the digital hand in (including a 100+ research logbook). All this was happening on top of preparing one daughter for secondary school, one starting uni up north and one leaving home.
One of the main things I’ve been doing to rest and refresh is take my dog on lots of lovely long walks, and one day I came across this field. Empty, laid bare, churned up, exposed - it was exactly how I felt! Reflecting on this I realised of course that this bare earth time is just part of the farming process, its doing what it’s meant to and waiting for what’s next. I saw the same field just one week later and it had turned green! 3 inch shoots had pushed their way through in just 7 days reminding me that we may feel empty but we’re not, we’re just waiting for the right time - this was a big encouragement to see.

SO NOW?

Well I’ve decided to take a break from pushing forward until Christmas. I deserve a proper change of pace and to enjoy some time off.
  • I’m sorting out our house and family stuff a bit, which I’ve neglected for quite a while. We’re adjusting to being a family of 3 rather than 5 (and counting the days till Christmas when they all come home again).
  • I’ve been making good on my promises of rewards for those who generously gave towards my crowdfunding campaign for the MA show - designing T-shirts, bags, printing copies of sketchbooks etc etc.
  • I’ve signed up for Karen Stamper’s ‘Free Up your Sketchbook’ online course, which I’m very excited about - I wanted something very different to the type of art I’ve been creating recently, and someone to provide a bit of guidance and structure. To play and have fun without having to write essays about the critical theory of it!!
  • I have a few other ideas up my sleeve that I may or may not follow through on as well, but this is a time for flexibility and grace, so we’ll just have to see!

Anyway, I’ll sign off for now by celebrating with you that I was thrilled to find out this week I’ve been awarded a ‘Distinction’ for my final project and for my MA as a whole! HUGE thanks for all your amazing support on this journey… (which is just getting started!!)

Last week my MA show came down and Friday I handed in my final write up - it’s done! So it’s time to share it all with you!
I have way more to share than anyone could cope with, so I’ll give you links and let you choose! Some of you would love to watch a video or 2, some of you would love to see behind the scenes and browse my research sketchbook/logbook, others a flip through my portfolio, I know some of you mad folk would love to pour over my essay and bibliography! Im not sure anyone wants to see my risk assessment or month by month diary but even that is available to peruse if you so wish! That’s the thing with handing everything in digitally - it’s super easy to share it all with my lovely friends, however far away you are!

This has been a labour of love and a dream come true. Every inch of this rather large installation has a story to tell from its 1000 hours of creation. Whether it be of sewing into the early hours of the night, of polystyrene foam dust all over my garden, of the 7 stitches in my arm, the missed family summer holiday or of the generous expertise shared in each media, or the paint party of 11 year olds to whitewash the papermache. A multitude of new techniques and materials discovered. A passion for sculpture and installation environments ignited.

I am more than ready for a holiday but already missing making art!

The support you guys have given me through all this has genuinely helped keep me strong, kept me smiling and kept me going. THANK YOU!

It’s been a LOONNNGG time coming but I’ve done it! Totalling about 980 hours making in the studio and around 60 hours installing it this week, and I’m so thrilled to see my plans become a reality, what I imagined and dreamt of become an actual thing in an actual room!
AND I filmed it all, cos I know you guys would love to see it coming alive.
Firstly here is my studio visit video from last Tuesday… right in the middle of the work.
And here is a timelapse movie of the installation from beginning to end.
I give you a little glimpse of the final result here but of course I’ve taken copious video footage and stills, plus have some professionals lined up to get some quality imagery in the next few days, so I’ll keep you waiting, do some organising and editing and promise to share them with you as soon as they’re ready.

So what’s next?

Put my feet up? catch up on sleep? go on holiday? oh I wish!! Not quite yet. The work is being examined this week before the exhibition opens to the public on Thursday, so I have fliers to hand out, meetings, the Private View and invigilating, BUT on top of that I now have to write up all the documentation to hand in to complete my MA. The problem with having made so much work is that there is a LOT that needs writing about! (I didn’t think this through did I?!) I’ve got to write an essay, create a digital portfolio of supporting work, put together a professional development file and compile a digital logbook sharing all the research, thoughts and conclusions. I really tried to get all this going alongside my art making but it soon got engulfed as the work got so full on and so much fun!
Anyway, enough about the boring stuff.

Would you like to come to my MA show? Here is an invitation - come and see it all in the flesh if you can!

And for all my lovely friends further afield don’t you worry, next week I’ll be sharing as much as I can with you online.

INSTALLATION THIS WEEK - MA UPDATE

23/8/2022

I’ve been finding it hard to find time to write this but am really keen to document this final chapter for you. Well it’s finally arrived - installation week!

This week in my studio…

Last Monday I started the week installing the biggest element of my exhibition, my tent pod. I was asked to do this ahead of the official install to allow for discussion and adjustment in our final group critique on Tuesday. It was scary and exhilerating in equal measures - would it actually work? What would other people think of it? Would I be asked to make changes? It was also rather surreal having made sketches, done mock ups and prototypes to actually see it come to life, filling the space like some evil twin of the Haahoos from the Night Garden!
Here is my studio video tour showing you the progress.
Picture
To answer my questions above - it did work (with a bit of trial and error), it has certainly sparked interest from anyone passing through the gallery, and yes I did need to make some adaptions. My design was originally widthways across the gallery but is now lengthways to allow for viewing of a beautiful gigantic print on the far wall, once in the space several parts needed moving around to avoid restricting traffic through the gallery or from blocking the view through doorways - this meant the left hand spike of my tent was sacrificed, and instead will be inverted serving as a pocket with a seed popping out.
Picture
Picture
The rest of my week was a production line of finishing off pieces in time for transporting on Sunday ready for install week, and not very much sleep! This included creating a felt hanging pod reminiscent of a christmas decoration, splatting a walking stick (for added stability for those who need it when climbing into my pod) and constructing a frame for suspending seeds from the ceiling in my tent pod.
Picture
Picture
I also had fun painting some false walls for my tent pod with spray paint and splatted fluorescent paint that glows in the dark.

How’s it going?

  1. I have to admit this week has exhausted me - recovering from our weekend in Scotland and working towards these deadlines have certainly created quite a push and although I’m excited about the show, I’m also longing for a holiday!
  2. I’m a few days late in blogging this week, and it’s already Monday! I’ve finished day one of install and I’m really pleased. Each element we do keeps throwing up the question ‘does this actually work in practice?’ but I’m used to experimenting and adapting from initial plans until I find solutions that work.
  3. I say ‘we’ because I have a really good, skilled and experienced friend helping me out, which makes all the difference in the world. He’s not only someone who’s great at cheering me on but also happens to be a professional art exhibition installer and media specialist who used to work at my college helping students with their shows - how handy is that?!
  4. Although there is a LOT to do, I’m not worried about whether we’ve got enough time to put it all together. However, around the edges of the hard work in the gallery during the day, there’s also other jobs for the evening (risk assessment, map and list of works, labels, invigilator instructions etc), plus still a few seeds and pods to finish off! And I’m increasingly aware of the amount of work it’s going to be to complete all the documentation that I need to hand in for marking. So the sooner the installation is complete the better.

Facts & figures

  • Installation has begun and must be finished by midnight 29th Aug ready for examination.
  • 33 pods finished (just 1 still to do) & 180 seeds finished (just 30 still to do)!
  • 1st September my show opens - 8th
  • 9th September show comes down + supporting documentation is handed in 16th
  • 4 weeks until my holiday - whoohooo!

1 WEEK TO GO - MA UPDATE

12/8/2022

I’m now heading into the FINAL week before I install my MA show (eek!). Things are getting exciting and SUPER busy. Let me fill you in on what I’ve been up to.

This week in my studio…

Last Saturday I had a team of eager 11 year olds help me whitewash 36 papermache balls, so this week I’ve been steadily working on finishing these off - coating them in colourful paint and splatting them before transporting them to college. These vibrant seeds will go inside my giant tent pod which will have UV lighting so they glow in the dark. Here’s a timelapse video of the process.
Picture
I then moved onto much smaller versions - there’s 60 of these to do, and they're all gettings covered in spots too!
Picture
Picture
I’ve also made a little progress on covering some conker spikes with Lycra, lots of these to complete next week.
Picture
Here's my studio visit video from this week…

How’s it going?

  • This weekend I’m actually in Scotland at the EDINBURGH Fringe to see my daughters show. I have to admit that although of course it’s good to spend time with my lovely family, this isn’t the ideal time for a break and it’s a challenge to keep the stress levels in check!
  • This Monday I install the tent element to my show and put place marks where I think the pods in my forest will go in time for a group crit on Tuesday to confirm FINAL POSITIONING of each part in relation to the others exhibiting in the gallery. I’m really looking forward to being beyond these 2 days when finally most of the uncertainties I’ve been living with since Christmas, of… will it work, will it look right, will it fit alongside others work, will the staff and students give their seal of approval, will be answered and I can just get on with working like crazy to finish and putting everything together!
  • And finally, as it literally gets to the point of counting the hours left, I’m looking at my ‘STILL TO DO’ list and wondering whether it’s possible. And the answer is “I don’t really know”. There are still too many unknowns to be able to quantify it really. I’ll work hard but I’ll try not to be too silly about it, there is flexibility in my plans and whatever doesn’t get finished in time will be ok.

FACTS AND FIGURES

  • 1 week until I install my show
  • 23 pods finished (11 still to do) & 117 seeds finished (108 still to do)!
  • 1st September my show opens
  • 16th September show comes down + supporting documentation is handed in
  • 5 weeks until my holiday!

2 WEEKS TO GO - MA UPDATE

6/8/2022

Exciting things are happening - let me fill you in on this weeks progress.

This week in my studio…

I had a really helpful meeting with the gallery technical officer fine tuning my plans for the construction of my art installation.
After research and various purchases of things I’d never heard of before I am now all set for putting all this art I’ve been making into the space it’s been created for. Metal cable, polyester cord, zip locks, crimps, scaffolding poles, MDF, scaffolding feet, nuts and bolts and concrete, which I’ve mixed and poured into 4 moulds to make feet for my tent pod. Even the builders renovating the windows in the gallery this week got persuaded to help me - hanging string over the ceiling joists whilst up their scaffold tower so I can access that space when I’m ready. My risk assessment has been reviewed, revised and I’m getting super excited about putting this thing together.

Studio Assistants
Here's my studio visit video from this week...

This week has involved some wonderful help from my studio assistants - from sewing to give my sore wrist a break, to papermache, to whitewashing I’ve set my little eager army to work and seen lots of progress. Even the dog managed to do some painting with her tail and ears!

I’ve added the finishing touches to my ceramic seeds, adding more chaos to some and adding more order to others! They work much better alongside my other seeds now, bringing more cohesion to the whole piece.

How’s it going?

  • I was bowled over by the support I received for my fundraising campaign, which finished last Sunday. I ended up succeeding my goal. Thank you so much those of you who contributed. What with those helping me financially and those helping me practically this week I feel really cheered on and encouraged in what I’m doing. My work is about light and life breaking through darkness and death, about hope rising and beauty emerging and people really seem to have caught the vision and enjoy partnering with me in this.
  • This week I’m daunted and determined to now paint and decorate the 44 papermache seeds that have been whitewashed today as well as hopefully decorating the inside of my tent pod. After focussing on all the black pods for a while, it’s so lovely to be doing something colourful!
  • This weekend we are heading to the Edinburgh Fringe to see one my daughters perform, which will be a nice break as a family (I can’t join them on our family holiday this year as it’s the same week I install the show), but being away this week is bound to add a little extra stretch to an already full schedule which I have to admit is making me a little nervous!

Facts & figures:

  • 2 weeks until I install my show
  • 22 pods finished (12 still to do) & 59 seeds finished (166 still to do)!
  • 1st September my show opens
  • 16th September show comes down + supporting documentation is handed in
  • 6 weeks until my holiday!

4 WEEKS TO GO - MA UPDATE

I’m heading into the last 4 weeks before I install my MA degree show and thought you’d like to see what I’ve been doing this week.

This week in my studio…

I decided it was time to face power tools again - 4 weeks on from my accident my arm is healing well and it was time to strengthen my confidence. I used my chainsaw to cut lots of sandwiched foam, then worked on the details with an electric bread knife, hand saw and rasp.
Picture
Picture
I’ve made more progress on the glue gun pod, the wire pods, and finished two more string pods
Picture
I’ve given some focus to my colourful seeds, bringing the ceramic ones home to paint, and splatting more material to sew on the felt and fur ones.
Picture
I finished the curtain rings pod and I had 2 fabulous studio assistants create papermache pods and felt seeds for me.

Here's my studio visit video from this week...

How's it going? ...

  1. This week I completed my Exhibition Proposal, otherwise known as a Case for a Space, this describes in detail what it is I’m doing and why and where I would ideally like my exhibition to be. Here is a link to to take a look: MA EXHIBITION PROPOSAL
  2. It’s a challenging time as there is a lot of overlap of groups of students wanting the same spaces for the show, we’ve all also suggested 2nd choices and are expecting some compromise. It’s really tricky, I really want to make sure that others are happy and their work gets the space it deserves but at the same time I’ve been working really hard and have an ideal of what I’d like my show to be. Due to window replacement across the school of art clashing with our show, there aren’t as many rooms available this time. So it’s a bit of a tense wait for a few more days for us all to see what our tutor decides and what impact that will have on our plans.
  3. I’ve also had to complete a Risk Assessment Form. Basically listing everything that could possibly go wrong with the installation I have planned which feels really counter- intuitive, which I’m trying to persuade them to let me do this ambitious project! I’ve thought this installation through so thoroughly, and have an answer and solution to every concern I think, so I’m hoping they will see this and give me the green light.
  4. There’s a lot of uncertainty to handle right now a. Will I get the space that I’ve been designing my work for or have to adapt/downside my plans (how big a compromise will this be) b. Will they allow me to do what I’m wanting to do in the space? c. Do I have time to get everything ready in time?
  5. On top of the art this week has been mega full with daughters birthdays, 2 performances, a graduation evening, visitors and a long meeting with fellow students to plan the admin of the show. My task is to do the map and list of works.

Facts & figures

  • 1 week until my exhibition space is confirmed
  • 4 weeks until I install my show
  • 16 pods finished (21 still to do) & 1 seed finished (194 still to do)!
  • 1st September my show opens
  • 16th September show comes down + supporting documentation is handed in
  • 8 weeks until my holiday!

5 WEEKS TO GO - MA UPDATE

16/7/2022

Just about to head into the last 5 weeks before I install my MA degree show and thought I’d share what I’ve been up to this week.

This week in my studio…

foam wall
I sandwiched together 44 pieces of insulation foam ready for carving into seeds and pods (and bought an electric bread knife to help me out)
Polymorph
I completed my Polymorph hanging pod from last week
5 WEEKS TO GO
  • I glazed my ceramic seeds & created a prototype of a hanging seed pod made of sliced thick felt, which needed thinking through logistically but I’m hoping should be fairly quick to make.
  • I glued a couple of polystyrene balls with curtain rings to make 2 pods to add to my hanging pod series and created a chickenwire/plaster pod
  • Most excitingly I had my first studio assistants session - 4 papermache seed pods were created in one day!
PAPERMACHE

How's it going?...

  • I worked out this morning that I am currently in the middle of 14 pieces of art (not counting all those I need to make), for a ‘completer finisher’ personality type this feels a little bit of a challenge but seems a necessary way to work at the moment due to drying times, trying things out, waiting for extra materials to arrive, working across 2 studio venues etc etc
  • This week has had a few EXTRAS to add into the mix - 2 daughters birthdays within 5 days of each other and a trip to A&E on Thursday that eclipsed the day due to a nasty split lip when my 11 year old tripped in a rehearsal at school. Next week is even fuller with my 3rd daughters birthday and graduation, visitors staying and 2 daughters playing the lead in 2 separate performances that need watching, plus the last week of school term ‘stuff’ that needs to happen.
  • I’m really excited about having found some extra studio help and am spending my weekend getting projects organised and ready for them to do. As well as gathering materials, creating example pieces and writing instructions, this has also meant some scary calculations and list writing. I worked out if all goes to my current plan I need to make 37 pods and 195 seeds! So far I have 12 pods & 27 seeds completely finished.
  • I spent all day Monday writing my ‘Case for a Space’ proposal, which formally documents my intentions for the show and gives my arguments for which exhibition space I would ideally like to have. I will complete this this coming Monday adding in imagery of mock ups, maps etc. I can’t wait until this decision is made by our tutors as it leaves a layer of uncertainty over the whole project which is unsettling, it makes things a little tense with fellow students too which is the last thing I want. It’s a weird situation to be in - I am creating a large, impactful installation that sort of really needs to be in the large gallery area in the centre of things, I’m having to fight or ignore my shyness, my worry of what others will think, that british nervousness about putting yourself forward and just go for what ultimately I believe just makes sense and is fitting for my art. Assertiveness, self promotion and seeking out the lime light seem to be as much a necessary part of being a professional artist as constantly working outside your comfortzone, not easy!

6 WEEKS TO GO!

9/7/2022

Just about to head into the last 6 weeks before I install my MA degree show and thought you’d like to hear what I’ve been upto this week.

In the studio this week...

  • I gathered all my work thus far together ready for a crit on Tuesday, it was really helpful to see how it all fitted together, as this work is more about the whole than each individual element (but of course you only work on it one piece at a time). I discovered a whole list of things that need adapting and changing, from sizes to colour to functionality.
MA crit prep
MA crit install
  • The crit was a chance to talk about all the planning and working out that I’ve been doing, as well as the physical art making - talking through risk assessment, showing my 3D and 5D models of what I’m aiming at and giving my reasoning for wanting the particular space I have my eye on for the exhibition. It was also a great chance to see everyone else work as I have very little overlap with my fellow students.
  • Following this crit we now need to write a final exhibition proposal, otherwise known as a 'Case for a Space’, outlining all the details of what, where, why and how.
  • I created a fresh studio schedule for myself of what to try to make each week, this is an ideal plan with an understanding that it may well not be realistic and might need downsizing nearer the time!
Studio View
  • I spent hours making a hanging pod with fluffy wool and then collected my daughter from her playdate only to see that they had lampshades that looked exactly the same as my “original art pod” in their front room!
  • I had a play with Polymorph - plastic pellets that melt and mould, and created another hanging pod.
  • I also worked with black glue gun sticks and curtain rings, wire and free motion embroidery - loosing track of how many projects I’m in the middle of right now!

How’s it going?…

  1. I feel more excited this week (most of the time). I found moving into a new studio space, gathering my work thus far together and sharing my plans with my tutors/students really helped make it feel real and soon (in a good way). I’ve also really enjoyed cracking on with so many mediums and playing/experimenting with ideas.
  2. Of course many things went wrong, I’m exploring new materials and then adapting and fighting them into submission until I achieve what I’m aiming to, but this takes time and repetition and a lot of problem solving. I feel like my dyslexia helps me in moments like this - it instills in you a problem solving approach to life and a determination that won’t give up when things don’t work first time!
  3. I’m finding my crowdfunding campaign is a helpful nudge to be more organised with sharing this project with my audience. I’m doing a weekly studio visit video, weekly blog and trying to keep more on top of sharing what I’m unto on a daily basis - whether this produces contributors for funding or not, it feels a positive thing to be sharing these exciting times with my friends and followers, and even to be documenting it for myself.

Facts & figures (not that I’m counting!):

  • 3 weeks until my exhibition space is confirmed
  • 6 weeks until I install my show
  • 1st September my show opens
  • 16th September show comes down + supporting documentation is handed in
  • 10 weeks until my holiday

7 WEEKS UNTIL MY MA SHOW

4/7/2022

I know you guys have been enjoying accompanying me and cheering me on through my MA journey (THANK YOU SO MUCH!) So I thought for the final couple of months I’ll attempt to share developments on a weekly basis, as things are really beginning to hot up in this final stretch.

facts & figures

  • 4 weeks until my exhibition space is confirmed
  • 7 weeks until I install my show
  • 1st September my show opens
  • 16th September show comes down + supporting documentation is handed in
  • 11 weeks until my holiday

In the studio this week

7 stitches
I started getting back to strength following my run in with an angle grinder. Had my stitches removed, had a shower, brain started functioning again etc.
New studio space
I moved into a new studio space at college (which I get all to myself), which got me quite excited. This will be great for trying parts of my installation out and storing all my large sculptures. I have a crit on Tuesday, so am planning to gather all my work thus far together. I’ll do a video to show you next week.
Glazed ceramics
I glazed my ceramic seeds using underglaze decal spots and stripes off Etsy which i love. Tried keeping these less busy than the last lot but planning to splat with fluorescent acrylic once fired.
Hanging Pods
I started experimenting with materials for hanging pods inspired by japanese lantern seed cases - so far I've tried wire, free motion embroidery, fish net tights & sewn/soldered lycra. Lots of PVA soaked beachballs hanging in my studio to bump my head on right now!
Crazy Protrusions
I've been trying out crazy protruding seeds for some of my pods - a bit of a nod to one of my favourite artists Yayoi Kusama.
Crowdfunding Campaign
I launched my fundraising campaign (as the cost of materials & expenses for such a large installation have been sizeable). It's that anxious wait and uncomfortable amount of promoting now for the next 30 days, hoping it isn't an embarressing flop!

How’s it going?…

I’m in a constant state of trying to hold my nerve on multiple levels at the moment and living in the tension between realism and fulfilling a dream.
  1. It's so hard to quantify how much I can make in the time I have left & what other unexpected interuptions might come.
  2. I'm still experimenting and creating things I've never done before (which really needs to stop soon!!) this provides me with equal measures of excitement and frustration.
  3. I won't find out what space I'm being given to exhibit in until 2.5 weeks before install, so all my ideas and plans have to held lightly and ready for adjustment.
  4. I've been attempting to find some voluntary studio assistants to help me create the huge quantity of elements this installation needs (even before I cut my arm) but had no success yet. It’s also not just been confirmed whether I'm allowed to bring in a friend to help me install this giant installation.
  5. The windows at Cambridge School of Art are being replaced throughout the summer causing limitation on facilities, room availability and a question mark over the impact on our show.
  6. And as well as July being all 3 daughters birthdays I'm also helping one transition to high school, one transition to uni and learn to drive, and one to transition out the other end of uni - so being a mum is demanding quite a bit of me at the moment too!
Despite all these things most of the time I am remembering to have fun and make the most of this fantastic opportunity!
Please consider joining my NEWSLETTER LIST so you don’t miss out on my news.
AND please consider contributing to my fundraising campaign HERE (where you can get a good overview of the story behind this project and bag yourself some treats I’ve designed especially for my supporters)
See you next week for the next instalment!
